Rarity: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Element: Glacio
Weapon: Pistols
Early Overview
Releasing as one of the main selling points of patch 2.0, Carlotta is a 5★ pistoleer of the Glacio element, and the first gunslinger to be added to Wuthering Waves’ character roster since the game’s launch. Yes, I’m surprised too that Kuro remembered that guns exist.
As a small tangent, if her Japanese voiceover sounds familiar, that’s because it should. Carlotta is voiced by Kana Ueda, who you may know from her other roles such as Rin Tohsaka (Fate), Yuel (Granblue Fantasy), Howa Type 64 (Girls’ Frontline), Skyfire (Arknights) and Yoimiya (Genshin Impact). Chances are, you are familiar with at least one of those names.
Compared to recent releases, Carlotta isn’t as gimmicky as, say, Camellya, Shorekeeper, or Youhu. Rather refreshingly, she’s fairly straightforward as far as Kuro Games’ more recent designs go, and that’s with Punishing: Gray Raven taken into account as well. Her entire gameplay loop revolves around gaining Moldable Crystals through a variety of attacks, then spending them on charging her Forte bar, which in turn is used to boost either her Heavy Attack or Resonance Liberation.
Overall straightforwardness doesn’t exempt her from having a few quirks of her own, however. Firstly and most importantly, all damage that doesn’t count from her basic attacks is considered as Resonance Skill DMG. Yes, that includes her Resonance Liberation.
Secondly, Carlotta’s attacks are able to repeatedly immobilise enemies for a short duration. Depending on the situation and what you’re trying to accomplish, this can either be a benefit or the bane of your existence, but it realistically helps in landing her full combo most of the time.
Finally, unless Kuro changed it while we were celebrating Christmas, Carlotta is able to parry attacks with her rifle when casting the special basic attack Necessary Measures. Did I mention she has a pocket rifle? Well, she has one, and thanks to it, she’s the first gunslinger to be able to parry. Truly, a gun is mightier than the sword.
While Carlotta doesn’t have a ton of hype going for her compared to Zani, another character teased to come in a later patch, she is the first “2nd generation” unit to be released and as such, she is bound to create a precedent as to whether Kuro has learnt their lessons from the player critique during the times of 1.X. It is to be seen soon enough whether this precedent will be positive or negative.
Skills
Carlotta’s skill descriptions are somewhat unique in their word salad factor as it stems mostly from Kuro Games’ need to name every single mechanic something distinct even, or especially, when not necessary.
Basic Attacks
Carlotta can perform two five consecutive attacks in quick succession, dealing Glacio damage. The skill description lists the number of attacks as two, but this is misleading: immediately after the second attack, Carlotta can chain into the replaced basic attack Necessary Measures thanks to the Moldable Crystals granted by her Forte. More on those in the Forte Circuit section.
As the first victim of the Hoverdroid added to the game back in patch 1.2, Carlotta forgoes the charged shot mechanic in favour of a more standard heavy attack where she consumes stamina to dash forward and deal Glacio damage with her pistols. At full Forte bar, she additionally consumes its charge to cast Containment Tactics instead, which, aside from a fancy name, turns the attack into an AoE, deals more damage, and cuts her Resonance Skill’s cooldown by 6 seconds. This can occur once every 22 seconds.
Unique for the gunslinger archetype so far, Carlotta’s mid-air attack has her slam down to the ground and deal Glacio damage to everything in the immediate proximity like a melee character. Unlike a normal melee character, however, following it up with a basic attack has Carlotta then flip over the target enemy and shoot them in the back.
Aside from that, Carlotta has access to the Dodge Counter moves like any other character in the game to date.
Resonance Skill
Carlotta shoots the target enemy with her rifle twice, dealing Glacio damage and applying Dispersion to them for 1.5s - which is a fancy way to say that they’re immobilised for that amount of time. The skill can be recast to consume all Moldable Crystals and deal three instances of Glacio damage as Carlotta dashes over the target enemy.
Forte Circuit
Moldable Crystals
Carlotta can hold up to 6 Moldable Crystals, which she gains by using either her Basic Attack 2, Heavy Attack, Resonance Skill and its recast, Intro or by successfully dodging an attack. In each case, she restores three crystals. When she’s in possession of at least one, a resource counter will appear next to her character model.
Every time Carlotta attacks an enemy with her extended basic attack or Dodge Counter, she consumes one crystal. As well, using her Resonance Skill consumes all crystals regardless of the amount held. For each consumed Crystal, Carlotta gains 10 points of Substance.
Substance
Carlotta can hold up to 120 points of Substance, which is represented by her Forte bar. She restores Substance every time she casts her Intro skill (30 points) or consumes Moldable Crystals (10 per crystal). Substance is used to boost the base damage multiplier of her Resonance Liberation or cast her enhanced heavy attack Imminent Oblivion once per 22 seconds, with the latter’s readiness represented by the crystal in the middle of her Forte bar glowing red. Both effects require and consume all 120 points of Substance.
Resonance Liberation
Carlotta deals Glacio damage to and around the target enemy, marks the targets with the Deconstruction debuff if they aren’t already tagged and enters Twilight Tango state. During Twilight Tango, her basic attacks are replaced with Death Knell (she shoots with her rifle) and all other attacks are disabled. After four shots, the fifth shot casts Fatal Finale, dealing a larger amount of Glacio damage and ending her Twilight Tango state.
During Twilight Tango, Carlotta is unable to charge her Forte and empties the bar on both initial cast and Fatal Finale. In return, she ignores 18% of enemy DEF stat when shooting targets marked with Deconstruction.
Intro and Outro
Carlotta’s Intro has her appear in place of the character swapped out and deal three instances of Glacio damage. No fanfare, no gimmicks.
On Outro, Carlotta deals a single instance of Glacio damage equal to a percentage of her ATK stat. Again, no fanfare and no gimmicks.
Inherent Skills
Carlotta’s first Inherent Skill, Flawless Purity, grants her a window of invulnerability during the cast time of her plunge attack after recasting her Resonance Skill. Additionally, it reduces the stamina drain while flying (not gliding!) by 20% while she’s on the team.
Her second skill, Ars Gratia Artis (“art for art’s sake”), allows her to inflict Deconstruction with her Intro, Resonance Skill recast, Resonance Liberation shots and her enhanced heavy attack.
Resonance Chain
Sequence 1 | When Carlotta deals damage to a target inflicted with Deconstruction, the Crit Rate of this instance of damage is additively increased by 12.5%. When Resonance Skill Chromatic Splendor hits a target inflicted with Dispersion, Carlotta additionally restores 30 points of Substance. |
Sequence 2 | The base damage multiplier of Resonance Liberation Fatal Finale is increased by 126%. |
Sequence 3 | Enhances Carlotta’s Outro by having it deal an additional instance of damage equal to 1032.18% of Carlotta’s ATK stat. Additionally, increase the base damage multiplier of both her Resonance Skill and its recast by 93%. |
Sequence 4 | Casting Heavy Attack, Heavy Attack: Containment Tactics, and Heavy Attack: Imminent Oblivion grants all Resonators in the team 25% Resonance Skill DMG Bonus for 30s. |
Sequence 5 | The base damage multiplier of Heavy Attack: Imminent Oblivion is increased by 47%. |
Sequence 6 | The base damage multiplier of Resonance Liberation Death Knell is increased by 186.6%. Additionally, the shots inflict the targets with Scattering for 1.5s, during which the target is immobilized. This effect is removed after 1.5s or when the target receives damage. |
Possible synergies
Verina, Shorekeeper and Baizhi
There are only so many ways to say “dealing damage is good, dealing more damage is better”. All three premier supports will boost Carlotta’s damage output in slightly different ways when put in the same team together with her.
Buffs | ||
Everyone: • 15% Team-wide All DMG Amplify • Rejuvenating Glow and Bell-Borne Geochelone OR Fallacy of No Return Verina: • 20% Team-wide ATK Bonus Shorekeeper: • 5%~12.5% Team-wide Crit Rate Bonus • 10%~25% Team-wide Crit DMG Bonus • Stagger breakout Baizhi: • 15% Team-wide ATK Bonus • 12% Glacio DMG Bonus (Resonance 6) |
Zhezhi | ||
With a lot of Carlotta’s damage output being considered as Resonance Skill damage, Zhezhi Outro is especially effective at boosting her performance.
Buffs | ||
• 20% Glacio DMG Amplify • 25% Resonance Skill DMG Amplify • 15 Resonance Energy regenerated instantly • Moonlit Clouds and Impermanence Heron |
Lumi | ||
Like Zhezhi, Lumi is capable of boosting Carlotta’s damage output by a considerable margin, albeit with the caveat of boosting only the Resonance Skill DMG part of her damage rotation, leaving the Basic/Heavy Attack portion unbuffed.
Buffs | ||
• 38% Resonance Skill DMG Amplify • 20% Team-wide ATK Bonus (Resonance 6) • Moonlit Clouds and Impermanence Heron |
Taoqi | ||
Provided you equip your Taoqi with Discord at rank 5, she can semi-competently buff Carlotta’s damage output with her Outro similarly toLumi. Unlike the latter however, Taoqi’s overall clunkiness makes her extremely unforgiving to mistakes when trying to use her in the sub-DPS role.
Buffs | ||
• Shields • 38% Resonance Skill DMG Amplify • Moonlit Clouds and Impermanence Heron |
Should you pull?
First and foremost: if Carlotta is a character you will enjoy playing or is your waifu, then don't let this stop you from pulling her. At the end of the day, it’s your account. Note that we will be using information provided by the latest beta test and this information is subject to change.
Yes?
- You like Carlotta’s design and her promotional material left you with a positive impression
- You’re in need of a Glacio element damage dealer not named Lingyang
- You enjoy the gunslinger archetype and were waiting for Kuro to give them some love
- [My editor forbade me from making that one Baldur’s Gate 3 joke...]
No?
- “Fuck it, we ball”
- You find gun users too clunky for your taste
- You (somehow) lack any sub-DPS that can even remotely support Carlotta
- You’re saving your pulls to go all out on Zani’s banner
Regardless of your decision, always remember to spend responsibly and to never use “building pity” as an excuse for gambling.
